LINKIN PARK

Linkin Park is a band from Agoura Hills, California. They achieved mainstream success in 2000 with their debut album, Hybrid Theory, which has since sold well over fifteen million copies.^[1] The band’s following studio album, Meteora also garnered success, topping the Billboard 200’s album charts in 2003.^[2] The band’s latest album, Minutes to Midnight, currently holding the top slot in the billboard 200 charts ^[3] was released internationally on May 14, 2007 and on May 15, 2007 in the United States.^[4]

THE WHO

Pete Townshend describes the moment that he and Roger Daltrey bonded and began their partnership which helped create the Who. Townshend has been posting excerpts from his upcoming autobiography, titled Who He?, on his blog (petetownshend-whohe.blogspot.com), and recalled the second time he encountered Daltrey, which led directly to the band's formation.
Prior to the meeting, a teenaged Townshend had been exiled by his group of friends for striking one of them in the head, while not knowing that he was recovering from a concussion, which ended up worsening the boy's injury. Townshend detailed how future Who bassist John Entwistle was among the only people who stayed friends with Townshend when it seemed his whole world turned their back on him.
Townshend wrote that he saw Daltrey hanging out at their school one day, recalling that, "Roger Daltrey had been expelled for smoking but was still impudently attending school to speak to his cronies when he wanted to. I'd seen him around at the foot of Acton Hill, carrying an exotic white electric guitar, which he'd made himself... Roger swaggered up in his Teddy Boy outfit, his hair combed into a grand quiff, and his trousers so tight they had zips in the seams..."
He went on to write that, "A few boys watched the encounter with interest. I had suffered from some very bad press over the (concussion) incident with Chris Sherwin, and many of the boys who sat on the fence were curious to see whether Roger would threaten me (as he had done once before after a playground altercation). He simply informed me that John Entwistle had told him I played guitar pretty well, and if an opportunity came up to join his band, was I interested? I was stunned... The invitation was one which could forever change my standing in the childish little world in which I still moved."
Townshend says that he's awed by how much history he and Daltrey share: "The great thing about being out on the road with Roger is that this is a 43-, 44-year relationship. It goes back a long way, maybe even longer than that, 46 years. It's great to have that relationship. But the musical background for it is incredibly varied."
The Who kick off their final European leg on May 16th in Lisbon, Portugal.

MAROON FIVE

Grammy-winning pop band Maroon 5 scored its first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 Thursday, with the largest jump to the top in the almost 49-year existence of the chart.

With a new album in the bag and already climbing the charts through Internet pre-sales, Maroon 5 (tickets music) will launch a short but sweet tour of small clubs and theaters at the end of the month.
The "intimate club tour," as the pop band's publicist terms it, will kick off May 30 in Boston and cover smaller venues in six cities. The complete list is included below. The group intends to launch a much larger tour of mainly arena-sized venues later this year, according to its record label.
"We're getting back to our roots on this tour," frontman Adam Levine said in a press release. "We love the sweaty intimacy of playing in a tightly packed room; you can literally taste the energy.
"Anyone who comes to these shows will see us at our core with no frills. Good times guaranteed for all!"
The group is set to ship "It Won't Be Soon Before Long"--its second studio effort and first since its 2002 debut, "Songs About Jane"--on May 22. Aside from a pair of live albums, the group has been content to issue a handful of singles in the five years between studio works.
Maroon 5 worked on the new album in a Hollywood mansion reputed to have once been owned by legendary magician Harry Houdini, where the group spent several years "recording jams, building songs, and basically releasing the pent-up creativity that had amassed over the years," Levin said in the band's online bio.
Pre-sales of "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" have already climbed to the number one spot on the iTunes album-sales charts, with the first single from the album, "Makes Me Wonder," hitting the top spot on both the singles and video iTunes charts.

SAOSIN

Californian hardcore band Saosin has achieved an amazing amount of respect from the underground scene. The band held a structured fan base even before the release of the band's first EP, Translating the Name. Pre- orders for the record were extremely high as devoted fans, starving for the CD after being teased with a sampler located on the band's site, quickly brought the EP to the #1 spot on Smartpunk.com's Top 100 CD orders. To put it simply--Saosin is the name on everyone's tongue that nobody can pronounce. Beau comments, “At the time we started the band, we were actually listening to a ton of Bjork and Sunny Day Real Estate, and I remember thinking how cool it would be to start a hardcore Bjork band.” Past reviews read about this CD compares Saosin to the likes of popular hardcore bands such as Glassjaw, Taking Back Sunday, and Finch. Saosin seems to be in a league of it’s own. Guitarists Justin and Beau swap powerful-yet-melodic riffs, with Chris on bass and Alex on drums. Anthony covers the lead vocals. Every note, so clear and perfect, dumbfounds you as it is quickly joined by well-executed screams that give the hardcore genre its label. “All of the lyrics I write for this band are inspired by the members of the band. The whole new record, all the songs that I'm writing, are going to be about the tour and the time that I spend living in Beau's garage. They are all about members of the band, the band as a whole, them as my friends, our time together, and the fears that come with it all (with the exception of SEVENYEARS, which is the last thing I wrote in my pre-California life),” Anthony says. "Saosin... it was our singer's idea. Saosin, it's this Chinese proverb, which means... like... keep your heart small, because nothing is forever. You know. Don't let yourself get attached to something, because that thing's gonna be gone eventually."

Kiss is an American rock band formed in New York City in 1973. Easily identified by their trademark face paint and stage outfits, the group rose to prominence in the mid-1970s on the basis of their elaborate live performances, which featured firebreathing, blood spitting, smoking guitars, and pyrotechnics. Kiss has been awarded 45 gold albums to date. ^[1][2] The group's worldwide sales exceed 80 million albums.^[3][4]

The original lineup of Gene Simmons (bass and vocals), Paul Stanley (rhythm guitar and vocals), Ace Frehley (lead guitar and vocals) and Peter Criss (drums and vocals) is the most successful and identifiable. With their makeup and costumes, they took on the personas of comic book-style characters—the Demon (Simmons), the Star Child (Stanley), the Space Ace (Frehley), and the Cat Man (Criss). Due to substance abuse problems and creative differences, both Criss and Frehley were out of the group by 1982. The band's commercial fortunes had also waned considerably by that point.

In 1983, Kiss abandoned their makeup and enjoyed a commercial resurgence throughout the rest of the decade. Buoyed by a wave of Kiss nostalgia in the 1990s, the band announced a reunion of the original lineup (with makeup) in 1996. The resulting Kiss Alive/Worldwide Tour was the top-grossing act of 1996. Criss and Frehley have since left Kiss again, and have been replaced by Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer, respectively. The band continues to perform, while Stanley and Simmons have remained the only two constant members.

FOO FIGHTER

Foo Fighters are a rock group formed by musician Dave Grohl in 1995. ^[1] The group is named after the World War II term "foo fighter", used to refer to mysterious aerial phenomena.^[2]

The band has earned a worldwide following, and have scored a number of hit songs, including "This Is a Call", "Everlong", "Learn to Fly", "All My Life", "Times Like These", "Best of You", and "DOA". Two of their albums, There Is Nothing Left to Lose and One by One, won Grammy AwardsBest Rock Album. Rancid is a punk rock band formed in 1991 in Berkeley, California, by Matt Freeman and Tim Armstrong.
Rancid includes Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Freeman on bass and vocals, Branden Steineckert on drums, and Lars Frederiksen on guitar and vocals. Former drummer Brett Reed left the band in 2006 and was replaced by Branden Steineckert, former drummer of The Used. As of November 2006, Armstrong and Freeman have been permanent members of the band and Frederiksen did not join Rancid until 1993 after the band was searching for a second guitar player.
They are credited, along with fellow California punk bands The Offspring and Green Day, with reviving mainstream popular interest in punk rock in the United States during the mid 1990s.[1][2]
Rancid's style often draws comparison with The Clash in their albums ...And Out Come the Wolves and Life Won't Wait, the latter of which is sometimes referred to as "Rancid's Sandinista!". This influence is further emphasized by direct homages to the seminal punk rock group in the lyrics to several of Rancid's songs, such as the title track to Indestructible.
Among mainstream audiences, Rancid is best-known for the songs "Ruby Soho" and "Time Bomb" from the 1995 album ...And Out Come the Wolves, as well as "Fall Back Down" from their 2003 album Indestructible. As of 2007, Rancid was working on a studio album, due to be released in spring.[3]

Sum 41
is a Canadian Juno Award winning band from Ajax, Ontario. The band was formed from members of several local high school bands, 41 days into the summer (July 31st) of 1996, hence the name Sum 41. The band consists of Deryck Whibley (a.k.a. Bizzy D) (lead vocals, guitar, keyboard/piano), Jason McCaslin (a.k.a. Cone) (bass and backing vocals), {( Mitchell Evans)} (a.k.a Mitchster) (Template:Lead guitar) and Steve Jocz (a.k.a. Stevo32 and now it is just Stevo) (drums and backing vocals). The band was first formed when Deryck and Steve decided to put aside their differences as rival bands to form a new band.
Since signing a record deal with Island Records in 1999, the band has released four studio albums, two live CDs, a few DVDs, over ten singles and sold millions of copies worldwide.
As of 2006 the band performed more than 600 times and have become famous for their world tours that are usually more than a year-long. [1]

Nirvana was a popular rock band from Aberdeen, Washington, United States. With the lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from their 1991 album Nevermind, Nirvana exploded into the mainstream, bringing along with it a subgenre of alternative rock called grunge. Other Seattle grunge bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden also gained in popularity, and, as a result, alternative rock became a dominant genre on radio and music television in the United States during the early-to-middle 1990s.
As Nirvana's frontman, Kurt Cobain found himself referred to in the media as the "spokesman of a generation", with Nirvana the "flagship band" of "Generation X".[1] Cobain was uncomfortable with the attention and placed his focus on the band's music, challenging the band's audience with their third studio album In Utero. While Nirvana's mainstream popularity waned in the months following its release, their core audience cherished the band's dark interior, particularly after their 1993 performance on MTV Unplugged.
Nirvana's brief run ended with the death of Cobain in 1994, but the band's popularity expanded in the years that followed. Eight years after Cobain's death, "You Know You're Right", an unfinished demo that the band recorded two months prior to Cobain's death, topped radio playlists around the world. Since their debut, the band has sold more than sixty million albums worldwide (see also Best selling music artists), including more than ten million copies of Nevermind in the US alone.[2] Nirvana remains a consistent presence on radio stations worldwide.

THE CURE

The Cure are a successful English rock band, widely seen as one of the leading pioneers of the British alternative rock scene of the 1980s. A combination of lead singer Robert Smith's iconic wild hair, pale complexion, smudged lipstick, and the frequently gloomy and introspective lyrics have led to the band being primarily classified as gothic rock.

EVANESCENCE

Biography
The goth-inspired Arkansas rock band Evanescence, with its Linkin Park-meets-Tori Amos sound backed by chugging guitars, easily made it to the top of the charts in 2003 with its Wind-Up Entertainment debut album, Fallen. Amy Lee and guitarist/songwriter Ben Moody formed the band at the end of the '90s after meeting in their early teens during a "youth camp," Moody said in a statement. "I heard Amy playing Meat Loaf's 'I'd Do Anything for Love' at the piano. So I went over to meet her, and she started singing for me. I was pretty much blown away, so I suckered her into joining a band with me." As a duo, Evanescence didn't perform live, instead opting to release EPs and the full-length Origin. Lee told the BBC that Evanescence was mastering demos in Memphis, TN, when she and the band were discovered by producer Pete Matthews. He shopped the songs to record companies in New York, and Evanescence eventually landed a contract with Wind-Up Entertainment, the home of Creed. The soundtrack to the 2003 Ben Affleck action movie Daredevil brought success to Evanescence. The begging "Bring Me to Life," which appeared on the soundtrack along with the ballad "My Immortal," became a hit. Paul McCoy, of labelmates 12 Stones, raps on "Bring Me to Life," which originated as a piano ballad. It proved to be a head start to Evanescence's future hit album Fallen, produced by Dave Fortman (Boy Sets Fire, Superjoint Ritual) and released in March 2003. Evanescence ran head first into controversy promoting Fallen. Originally, it was released in the Christian and secular markets; however, the band's use of profanity during an interview with Rolling Stone prompted its label, Wind-Up Records, to recall Fallen from Christian stores. Ironically, 12 Stones is also labeled Christian. Fallen surpassed double-platinum status, reaching the Top Ten in the United States, including the Top Contemporary Christian Albums chart, the Top Five in Canada, and number one in the United Kingdom. The Strokes are an American rock band, consisting of Kon, that was formed in 1999 and rose to fame in the early 2000s as a leading group in the garage rock revival.
Upon the release of their acclaimed début album Is This It in 2001, many critics hyped the group as the "saviors of rock" for their stripped down sound heavily influenced by bands such as Television. Since then, the band has maintained a fan base and has enjoyed much success in the United Kingdom, and Canada.

ALTER BRIDGE

The evolution of Mark Tremonti, Scott Phillips and Brian Marshall as artists is marked with the debut of Alter Bridge. After selling 30 million albums worldwide, Creed has called it quits and its members have chosen to pursue new creative directions. Over three albums, Creed achieved countless industry accolades, had two # 1 albums, and played to millions of fans around the world. Guitarist/ songwriter Mark Tremonti states, “After all Creed achieved professionally, I felt that I needed to refocus on the goals that I had personally. One of those goals was to get back to my rock and roll roots. After Creed took a break, band-mate Scott Phillips and I started to jam together again and realized that we both shared the same vision and were surprisingly anxious to get back out there and start doing it again.” The evolution continued when original Creed bassist Brian Marshall, who was not part of Creed’s Weathered album and had been working as a musician/ producer at his home studio, got a call from Tremonti. “When I got the call from Mark I could tell by the tone of his voice that Alter Bridge was something that he was really excited about and I immediately knew that I wanted to be a part of it. He told me, ‘Your bass playing matches the sound more than any other, you’re the guy’, he told me. It’s great to be working with those guys again, we haven’t skipped a beat,” Marshall notes. In addition to Tremonti, Phillips and Marshall is Myles Kennedy. Myles, formerly of the Mayfield Four, was recruited to be the band’s singer. Tremonti’s search for a vocalist had begun in late 2003. “We didn’t have a timetable and we were prepared to take as much time as needed to search the world for the best available rock roll vocalist when we remembered Myles from the Mayfield Four who had opened for Creed in 1998,” Tremonti recalls. “We called him and asked him to lay down vocals on a couple of tracks we were working on. None of us could recall hearing someone with his voice or passion – as soon as we heard what he did we knew he was the guy. Then he came down to rehearse with us in Orlando and he was one of the nicest and most humble people we had ever met; everything just clicked with all four of us. As we were running through the songs, the future fell into place before our eyes.”The shared vision of the band seemed to coincide with a concept from Tremonti’s youth, and the name ‘Alter Bridge’ was born. The name comes from a long-standing bridge near Tremonti’s childhood home in Detroit, which was often regarded as a boundary to the children in surrounding neighborhoods; beyond it was uncharted territory. The small bridge epitomized “choice” and “the unknown” for Tremonti. While there remains a sense of familiarity amongst he, Phillips and Marshall, there is a natural level of excitement that is evoked from what is new, and ultimately unknown, about the future– they are truly starting a new chapter in their lives. Tremonti notes, “It’s a new road ahead of us, but the essence of this band is organic and honest rock n’ roll. The music is driven by melody and instrumentation. It is all about fun, and if it weren’t, I doubt any of us would be committed to the new band to the level that we are.”As a way of indoctrinating Myles into the fold, the three chose an interesting initiation rite –they all went bungee jumping over a ledge from a 300-foot drop. As Phillips mentions, “This is representative of what is going on with the new band. Everything is a lot of fun for us.” Tremonti adds, “The three of us have always been great friends, so it was important to find somebody who could fit in and who we would be comfortable with. There is no doubt that Myles is that guy.”On joining the fold, Kennedy mentions, “When the call came in from Mark, I was working on a solo record in Spokane, Washington and I didn’t expect to ever be a part of another rock band. Now that I am here, these guys are the antithesis of the prototypical rock stars, and the setting has made me feel more empowered than ever before.” Prior to joining Alter Bridge, Myles had been signed to Epic Records and released two albums with the Mayfield Four. Kennedy explains, “The experience was incredibly significant in preparing me for this opportunity, and I learned a tremendous amount.”Alter Bridge’s debut album One Day Remains (Wind-up) was produced by Ben Grosse (Filter, Fuel, Sevendust). When asked about the choice Phillips mentions, “Personally, I have always been a big fan of his.” Tremonti weighs in, “I spoke to John Connolly from Sevendust and his thoughts combined with the sound of the Filter record were enough for me.” The selection is a perfect choice considering the fact that according to Kennedy, “The music we are creating covers a fairly wide scope and crosses a lot of boundaries – there are elements of modern rock, soul, and aggressive metal all incorporated into the mix.” Tremonti shared, “With this album, we are trying to learn from our past but begin with a different perspective. Ben definitely offered the setting we were looking for, and on a production level, his recordings are sonically huge. On the Filter album, you think every instrument will be drowned out by another in the mix, but he has this knack for making each track stand out without losing any of its sonic power.”The majority of the songs took root in a small handheld recorder where Tremonti started by recording riffs and melodies. “The first track I started to work on was Shed My Skin - it really digs into events of my past that shape who I am today. From a lyrical perspective, I spent more time on this one than any of the others. All you have to do is listen and you will get a pretty clear picture of where I am coming from.” He continues, “There are a lot of themes on this record that are very personal, for example In Loving Memory is about my mother who recently passed away. In terms of purely personal significance, you cannot get any deeper than that. It is definitely a sad, but uplifting song.” This band displays a respect for the roots of where rock came from. The lineage for the material ultimately draws its closest connection to the Seventies. As Tremonti mentioned, “Back in the Seventies, there seemed to be a greater focus on great melodies and great musicianship. Melody is the core of everything. It is more important than a vocal, drum fill, or bass line. Melodies run the show, and without them there is nothing.” He went on, “The Seventies can really be defined by one word --- real. From the beginning we have tried to work within the parameters of being true to that quality, while at the same time bringing the sound into the 21st Century. I do believe that the realness comes out in this music purely as a product of us doing this for the fun of it. It begins and ends with the love of the music.” Kennedy offers, “It is so important to begin with a great song. If the song is not there, it will never work. A great, timeless song is what rock n’ roll has always been about. Down to My Last, gave me the chills when I first heard it, and that hasn’t happened to me in a very long time.” Given the history that Tremonti, Phillips and Marshall have together, there is obviously a natural continuity that still exists between Creed and Alter Bridge, yet there are new and significant dynamics in Alter Bridge’s music that can definitely be pointed to. Most notably, on tracks such as Open Your Eyes and Find The Real, the compositions feature Tremonti singing more harmonies than he has in the past. Also, with Myles there is the additional dynamic of having a second guitarist when the band plays live that definitely makes a significant impact. Tremonti adds, “Myles also brings an amazing vocal approach to the material he is able to deliver with an amazing ease, whether he is hitting the highest of the highs or the lowest of the lows. His natural projection is amazing.” Lastly, the trademark soliloquy guitar intro to the songs that made many of Creed’s tunes so poignant continues to find life within many of the compositions that make up this repertoire, and the guitarist continues to be a purveyor of tasteful guitar lines. The impact of the reunion of Phillips and Marshall is also very evident. Both players emerge as forces in their own right – whether it’s Marshall controlling the groove on Burn it Down, or Phillips delivering a constant rush in Metalingus As the quartet awaits the release of their debut, there is, as Marshall points out, “A combined level of excitement and fear in starting over. It definitely does feel, for at least me personally, like the My Own Prison days.” Phillips continued, “The most significant things that we are taking from the Creed experience are the lessons that we learned. From the beginning, we decided that it would be unfair to the fans and ourselves if anyone other than Creed were out there playing Creed songs. We truly believe that the decisions we’ve made for our future are the right ones. After writing and rehearsing the new material, we are confident that we’ve made the right choices.” Tremonti added in summation, “It’s no longer about the past – it’s about the future. This is a new band and a new beginning.”
